Boston Victory Soccer Club has signed former New England Revolution and Providence College midfielder Andrew Sousa as coach Sergio Taborda continues to strengthen his squad ahead of the club’s inaugural 2012 PDL (Professional Development League) season.

Sousa will line up for Boston Victory this Saturday, April 21, at 7pm in a preseason game against Junior Lone Star FC from Philadelphia at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy. Admission is $5 at the venue, which is half the price of regular single game tickets for the new season, which kicks off on May 5 and sees the Victory’s home opener on Saturday, May 12 at 7pm. “I think it is a great opportunity for me to represent a club in our area,” said Sousa. “I have always been a local type of guy involved in my community and for me to play for a team in Boston with a lot of passionate supporters and members who run the team.

“My first impression of Boston Victory took me by surprise. I didn’t expect a team to have so many passionate members already getting a lot of things going forward for the club.”

Sousa was selected by the Revs in the third round (42nd overall) of the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft on January 18 last year and played in eight games in the MLS Reserve League, scoring two goals. The Fall River, Mass., native started one game for New England in the U.S. Open Cup against Kansas City.

“Andrew is a very talented player who will bring experience and some extra quality to our midfield,” said coach Taborda. “It is important to us that we have signed a local player who grew up and learned to play soccer in Massachusetts. I am sure he will quickly become a favorite among our fans this season.”

Having played his freshman year at Limestone College, Sousa moved to Providence College and finished his career with 8 goals and 7 assists in 67 appearances for the Friars, including 4 goals  as a senior. The 22-year-old is a product of B.M.C. Durfee High School and Bayside United F.C., Blackwatch R.I. and the Nor’easters club teams.
